Reissued in 2018 Demon Days, Gorillaz didn’t just make a second record — they turned a cartoon project into a real, bruising piece of pop art. Born from the fertile imagination of Damon Albarn and Jamie Hewlett and produced with the shadowy touch of Danger Mouse, Demon Days took the genre-hopping whimsy of their debut and shaped it into something tougher, darker, and almost mythic in sweep. It’s a nocturnal journey through chaos and crisis — a danceable apocalypse with a heartbeat.
The album wastes no time dropping you into its mood. The eerie “Intro” segues straight into “Last Living Souls,” a grim meditation on the frailty of our better natures, before the edgy, New Wave-tinted “Kids with Guns” — featuring Neneh Cherry — points a crooked finger at youth and violence in a world gone numb.
Then comes the iconic “Dirty Harry,” with its tongue-in-cheek funk groove and children’s choir undercurrent, a twisted reflection on militarism and moral confusion in the 21st century. “Feel Good Inc.” — fueled by rollicking bass and a memorable turn from De La Soul — became the album’s global flagbearer, its sardonic title a cruel joke about our hunger for distraction.
On Demon Days there’s tension between grim landscapes and unexpected beauty. “El Mañana” pairs hazy guitars with reflective melancholy, while “Every Planet We Reach Is Dead” hits like a post-industrial lament for a world that’s lost its pulse. “November Has Come,” anchored by MF DOOM, is half hip-hop bruiser, half existential shrug — all with the cool detachment of someone watching the world burn from a rooftop.
What made Demon Days so thrilling — and so enduring — was its refusal to be just another pop record. It’s a concept as well as a collection, a kaleidoscope of styles that channels despair, humor, and joy.
