This is a record about getting lost on purpose. About chasing something you can’t quite name. Snipe Hunter arrived in July 2025, Childers had already carved out a reputation as one of country music’s most fiercely independent voices—a songwriter equally at home with front-porch ballads and quiet political statements. But this album marks a turning point. Childers teamed up with legendary producer Rick Rubin—a pairing that signaled something bigger than just another roots record. Rubin, known for stripping artists down to their essence (or blowing their sound wide open), encouraged a looser, more exploratory process, with recording sessions stretching from Malibu to Hawaii.
At the same time, Childers was deep in a period of personal evolution—years into sobriety, newly reflective, and increasingly drawn to spiritual traditions outside his upbringing, including Hindu philosophy and pilgrimage practices. The result is his seventh studio album—and easily his most unpredictable. Calling Snipe Hunter a “country album” feels almost beside the point. Yes, the bones are still there—fiddle lines, plainspoken storytelling, that unmistakable Kentucky drawl—but they’re stretched across something far more elastic.
Childers pulls from Appalachian folk, gospel choirs, ragtime, psychedelic rock, and even Indian devotional music, creating a sound that feels both deeply rooted and completely unmoored. “Eatin’ Big Time” kicks things off in a blur of swagger and surreal imagery, while “Bitin’ List” leans into humor with a snarl. Then there’s “Tirtha Yatra,” where spiritual longing collides with global influence, and “Oneida,” a long-awaited studio version of a fan favorite that bridges his past and present.
This is an album about the search—for meaning, for faith, for self. And like any real search, it’s messy, nonlinear, and occasionally frustrating. But it’s also alive in a way few records are.
