About this record
Comes on vinyl LP.
Pet Sounds (1966) is widely considered one of the most influential albums in the history of popular music. A departure from their earlier surf and car-themed hits, Pet Sounds marked a dramatic shift in The Beach Boys’ sound, with Brian Wilson taking creative control and crafting an album that was both complex and emotionally resonant. Blending lush, intricate arrangements with innovative studio techniques, the album blends elements of pop, rock, classical, and experimental music.
Themes of love, longing, and introspection permeate Pet Sounds, and its mood ranges from the wistful and melancholy to the hopeful and joyful. The album features lush vocal harmonies and unconventional instrumentation, utilizing everything from theremins and bicycle bells to harpsichords and string sections. Standout tracks like “Wouldn’t It Be Nice,” “God Only Knows,” and “Sloop John B” showcase the band’s ability to combine sophisticated compositions with the accessibility of pop music. The album was produced, arranged, and almost entirely composed by Brian Wilson with guest lyricist Tony Asher.
