The Cosmic Selector Vol. 1 is the fifth studio album from the Los Angeles-based band Lord Huron, released in July 2025. This album sees the band expanding on their signature cinematic, reverb-drenched Americana and folk-rock sound, delving into even more cosmic and melancholic territory. Thematically, the album explores a “vision quest” through a stark, open, California desert-like landscape, with songs about a search for identity, fate, and the roads not taken.
Known for their storytelling, Lord Huron leader Ben Schneider continues to weave narratives filled with regret, lost love, and a sense of existential dread and mystery. The album’s title refers to a mythical jukebox-like device that allows one to choose their fate, a concept that underpins the lyrical journey.
Musically, the record maintains the band’s core sound—richly textured guitars, poetic lyrics, and haunting melodies—while incorporating new elements. It features a collaboration with actress Kristen Stewart on the eerie, spoken-word track “Who Laughs Last,” and a duet with Kazu Makino of Blonde Redhead on “Fire Eternal.” Other standout tracks include the wistful opener “Looking Back,” the powerful and bittersweet “Bag of Bones,” and the contemplative “Nothing I Need.”
