Following the astronomical success of 1977’s Rumours, Fleetwood Mac found themselves in a position few bands survive intact: the world expected a sequel to perfection. If Rumours was polished California heartbreak, Tusk is the messy aftermath.

At the center of the record is Lindsey Buckingham, who pushes the band into unfamiliar territory with a kind of restless studio experimentation. Armed with tape machines and a growing fascination with lo-fi textures, Buckingham strips down the glossy pop formula that made Fleetwood Mac superstars. The guitars crackle, drums echo strangely, and songs often feel like sketches captured in the moment rather than radio-ready blueprints. Nowhere is this more obvious than on the title track, “Tusk.” Built around pounding percussion from the University of Southern California marching band, the song sounds like a parade marching straight through a rock studio. It’s chaotic, hypnotic, and unlike anything Fleetwood Mac had ever recorded. At a time when audiences expected another “Go Your Own Way,” the band delivered something that felt closer to art-rock theater.

Stevie Nicks continues to operate in her own mystical orbit. Tracks like “Sara” float through the album like fog rolling across the Pacific coast—dreamy, romantic, and emotionally haunted. Her songs are slower, moodier, and deeply atmospheric, providing a hypnotic counterweight to Buckingham’s nervous energy.

What makes Tusk fascinating is how uneven it can be. At twenty tracks, the album is intentionally sprawling. Some songs feel like fragments; others stretch into fully realized pop gems. But that unpredictability is part of the record’s personality. It’s the sound of a band refusing to become a nostalgia act before their time. Today, Tusk is often viewed as one of the boldest albums of the late ’70s—a restless, experimental statement made by a band at the height of their fame. Instead of repeating the formula that made them legends, Fleetwood Mac dismantled it piece by piece.
