Deftones is an exercise in beautifully controlled chaos. Chino Moreno sounds absolutely vital here, effortlessly shifting from a vulnerable, Cocteau Twins-inspired croon to the kind of throat-shredding, blood-curdling screams that sound like a man tearing his own soul out. To capture the definitive Deftones alchemy, the band locked themselves in the studio with legendary producer Terry Date (the mastermind behind Around the Fur, White Pony, and 2020’s Ohms). But Date pushes them into modern, claustrophobic territory here. The low-end on Maverick is absolutely massive, anchoring Stephen Carpenter’s dropped-G# guitar chugs into a heavy, industrial-tinged groove.
